Digital Learning Series: Building Artisan-Retail Partnerships for Success
On October 13, 2016, join Mercado Global's Creative Director, Meg Koglin, for a lively discussion on how to build artisan-retail partnerships for success. With extensive experience on both sides of artisan-retailer partnerships in her current position at Mercado Global, an ethical fashion brand and organization working with artisans in Guatemala, and in many roles building design and sourcing categories at major retailers including Eileen Fisher, she will share her unique perspective. From the corporate to the cooperative, learn more from her real-world examples and strategies to make these partnerships a win-win. The session will last one hour, beginning at 3:00pm EDT.

On September 10, join the Alliance for Artisan Enterprise and Smithsonian's Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage at the Freer/Sackler Galleries in Washington, DC and hear from two master Tibetan artisans, Nima and Dawa Dakpa. The father and son team are working to preserve the traditional bronzework techniques—known as khyenle—used to create sacred objects in Dzongsar, in the Tibetan region of Kham, Sichuan Province, and share them with a new generation. 13th annual International Folk Art Market:
Early this month, the Alliance team visited our members and partners at the annual International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico! At the market, the Alliance offered our first-ever Kiva loan workshop, worked with market artists to identify business goals and needs, and explored the beautiful pieces handcrafted around the world. Introducing the Alliance Digital Learning Series
The Alliance for Artisan Enterprise is a diverse community of artisan businesses, social enterprises, individuals, and more working at different points in the artisan supply chain. Our community ranges from Chinchero weavers and Sudanese beaders to technical service providers and market organizers. We strongly believe that each member is integral to the artisan sector as a whole, and has important insights to share. To share learnings, provide short trainings, and reach our members around the world, the Alliance is launching a Digital Learning Series.
Introducing the Alliance Digital Learning Series!
The Alliance for Artisan Enterprise is a diverse community of artisan businesses, social enterprises, individuals, and more working at different points in the artisan supply chain. Our community ranges from Chinchero weavers and Sudanese beaders to technical service providers and market organizers. We strongly believe that each member is integral to the artisan sector as a whole, and has important insights to share. To share learnings, provide short trainings, and reach our members around the world, the Alliance is launching a Digital Learning Series.
How will it work?
The Alliance is working with our members, especially technical service providers, to host short (30-45 minute) webinars, Google Hangouts, YouTube features, and other digital resources exclusively for the businesses in our network. This series is intended to share resources and encourage collaboration. All sessions will take place online, and will be recorded and saved in the Alliance member portal. All members are encouraged to sign up and participate!
Handmade Trends in the Global Market with ByHand Consulting
ByHand Consulting is a founding member of the Alliance for Artisan Enterprise. Its experienced team hosts Incubator at Artisan Resource / NYNOW, provides one-on-one artisan business consultations, and hosts product and business development workshops for artisans around the world. On July 14 at 2:00 pm EST, join the Alliance for Artisan Enterprise and ByHand Consulting in our first Digital Learning Series webinar. The 45 minute webinar will coverthe top trends affecting the unprecedented desire for artisan goods, and how entrepreneurs can capitalize from it. ByHand Consulting will discuss opportunities for both international artisan organizations and US buyers.

Spotlight: Estrella de Mar
"Love is the message, fashion is the medium."
In 2012, Emily and Julie founded Estrella de Mar after falling in love with the extraordinary traditional textiles and richness of Mayan culture in Guatemala. Today, Estrella de Mar provides financial empowerment through dignified employment. The brand works with worker-owned women's weaving cooperatives and small family businesses to produce handwoven homeware and accessories, sharing a commitment to ethical, sustainable practices and high-quality results.
The methods used in the craftsmanship of Estrella de Mar pieces have been practiced for thousands of years in Guatemala. Fabric is woven on backstrap and foot looms. Watch a short video about the weaving process here!

Is Kiva right for you? If you're not sure, read how Mela Artisans used the Alliance's Artisan Loan Program to provide stable employment for Kashmiri embroiderers! The organization now works with women artisans who practice traditional zalakdozi hook embroidery, which resembles crochet and dates back to the 1400s. Read more on the Alliance blog!

This month, the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage hosted a special symposium on Cultural Sustainability. Unlocking the economic potential of the artisan sector at the Skoll World Forum:
April 13-15, 2016, nearly 1,000 leaders from over 60 countries gathered at Oxford's Said Business School for the Skoll World Forum. This annual gathering of thought leaders pushes the boundaries on global innovation and social change. March 8, 2016, the Alliance celebrated International Women’s Day with the Aspen ASCEND program at the Aspen Forum on Women & Girls: Conversations Across Generations. The Forum was co-hosted by Alliance Director Peggy Clark and ASCEND’s Anne Mosle to explore a nuanced approach to women’s issues. The program featured an array of explosive, thought-provoking women discussing violence, progress, barriers, and opportunities for women around the world, including Alliance member Reema Nanavaty of SEWA. 2015 was a fantastic year for the Alliance for Artisan Enterprise. Thank you for your continued support of our members and the global artisan sector! This year, our community grew to 74 member organizations, we reached over 2.5 million people in the #ChooseArtisan social media Thunderclap, and Secretary of State John Kerry recognized the economic value of the sector during the launch of the Global Campaign for Artisan Enterprise in September.

2015 was a fantastic year for the Alliance for Artisan Enterprise. Thank you for your continued support of our members and the global artisan sector!
This year, our community grew to 74 member organizations, we reached over 2.5 million people in the #ChooseArtisan social media Thunderclap, and Secretary of State John Kerry recognized the economic value of the sector during the launch of the Global Campaign for Artisan Enterprise in September.
Other accomplishments include:
- Launching the #ChooseArtisan public awareness campaign, including the social media Thunderclap and Alliance for Artisan Enterprise social wall - share a post today!
- Welcoming over 300 artisans, executives, thought leaders, and policymakers to the U.S. Department of State for Artisan Enterprise: The New Startup Economy
- Designing a new Artisan Enterprise Innovation Fund, engaging national level government partners, and raising initial project support - more details coming soon!
- Partnering with Kiva and the TreadRight Foundation to provide financing opportunities to artisan businesses
- Piloting the Artisan Value Chain Toolkit in Rwanda, the Philippines, Santa Fe, and at the Aspen Institute.
- Advocating successfully for re-authorization of the African Growth and Opportunity Act
- Producing artisan sector report with UNESCO researcher Simon Ellis
- Holding successful meetings and forums for collaboration and sharing of best practices

These voices came from all over the world - messages were shared by artisans, artisan supporters, organizations, policymakers, and more! The movement is just beginning. This holiday season, the Alliance is proud to support #ShopSmall. Over half of our member organizations are artisan businesses – organizations that work directly with artisans around the world to design, produce, and sell handcrafted products.

Recent visits: the Alliance meets Artesanias de Colombia & Mincetur de Peru
This November, Alliance Director Peggy Clark visited artisan groups and government agencies in Colombia and Peru. She explored local artisan cooperatives and learned about traditional handcrafted goods. On November 6, 2015, Peggy shared the launch of the #ChooseArtisan Thunderclap with Artesanias de Colombia.
